NotesErnest A. Yarrow (1876-1939) was an American missionary and relief worker who served in Eastern Turkey and the Caucasus in the early twentieth century.
NotesA graduate of Wesleyan University and the Hartford Theological Seminary, he first arrived in Eastern Turkey in 1904 under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions and was responsible for education programs at the mission in Van. He was present during the siege of Van in 1915 and subsequently escaped to Russia and returned to the United States.
NotesIn 1916, he returned to the Caucasus with the newly-created American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, which ultimately became Near East Relief. Yarrow served as Director General of the Caucasus Branch of Near East Relief for most of the period from 1920 to 1925, overseeing humanitarian relief programs that served tens of thousands of Armenian refugees. In the final decade of his life, he served as the director of field operations and assistant treasurer of the Edward W. Hazen Foundation in the United States.
